Leopard Seals are the largest of the true Antarctic seals. They can grow to over 3 metres and weigh, on average, 540 kilogrammes. They are usually found on pack ice, but they also spend a lot of their time around the breeding grounds of (1) penguins their main food. Their smooth, flat (2) streamlined bodies are well adapted to their natural environment in several ways:

  • Like most other seals, they keep warm in the (3) frozen Antarctic with a thick layer of (4) fat under their skins.
  • They have wide, flat (5) flippers that they use like arms to help them swim more powerfully. The bones on these body parts are very long, and the skin between them is (6) webbed like the feet of a bird.
